The Tamron 17-28mm zoom, which shares the same development concept as the hugely popular Tamron 28-75mm, was designed with the highest priority on delivering high optical performance in a light and compact form factor. Tamron's engineers have achieved an unrivalled compact size (99 mm) and low weight (420 grams) for a 17-28mm zoom range. The total length does not change when zooming or focusing, which creates stable, well-balanced handling and excellent portability. The Tamron 17-28mm also has a filter size of just 67 mm, which is very small for an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens. This new lens has the same filter size as the Tamron 28-75mm, so you can use the same lens caps and filters.
The 17-28mm focuses from very close up. The minimum focusing distance at the ultra-wide end is 19 cm (the same as the 28-75mm) and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:5.2. At the 28mm tele end, the maximum magnification ratio is 1:6, while the minimum focusing distance is still only 26 cm. This remarkable performance allows you to create compositions that emphasise perspective and are unique to wide-angle lenses.
The optical design of the 17-28mm zoom consists of 13 elements in 11 groups, including three aspherical elements, two LD (Low Dispersion) elements and one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element with properties close to those of fluorite. Together they effectively suppress chromatic aberration and other aberrations. In addition, Tamron's legendary BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating effectively reduces ghosting and flare. By making use of in-camera functions*, this lens offers excellent optical performance from edge to edge across the entire zoom range, matching the latest high-resolution image sensors. The combination of compact size, light weight and performance lets you capture a wide variety of genres, including landscapes, architecture and casual snapshot photography.
The AF drive contains a sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens, while the RXD motor unit delivers optimised AF control. This results in very fast and accurate autofocus, so you can keep focus on constantly moving subjects or while shooting video. The extremely quiet operation is a major advantage when recording video. The compact configuration of the RXD AF drive system also contributes to an unprecedented reduction in size and weight for this bright ultra-wide-angle lens.
Moisture- and dust-resistant seals are placed around the lens mount and at other critical locations to prevent moisture and/or raindrops from getting in and to enable a moisture-resistant construction. This feature offers extra protection when shooting outdoors in adverse weather conditions. In addition, the front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellent properties. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and less vulnerable to the harmful effects of dirt, moisture or greasy fingerprints, which makes maintenance much easier.
