Rances
"If my work hung in a museum, I'd want people to stop — not walk on by."
Rances is 25 and a full-time fashion, portrait and beauty photographer. He got his first real camera at twelve, taught himself everything, and now shoots campaigns that end up in magazines and on store shelves. In this video he talks about colour, contrast, flash — and why he still walks into a store to buy his gear.
MEET RANCES
Making beautiful things — that's what drives him.
At a Disneyland parade, while other kids were cheering, a young Rances was photographing every character that passed. At twelve he got his first real camera and never put it down: friends, pets, sunsets — and once half a day lying in the grass, waiting for a beetle to walk onto the perfect leaf.
Today he shoots fashion, portrait and beauty for brands and magazines. His style? Colourful, high-contrast and a little extra. His "I made it" moment was his first in-store campaign: "I walked in and suddenly saw my own photo on a make-up stand."

01
"How did you get into photography?"
"I was always making things — drawing, crafting, anything. When I got a camera, I thought: wow, now I can make really beautiful things. Showing my photos to my grandparents and seeing their reaction made me so happy. I think that's when I knew: this is what I want to do."
02
"What makes fashion photography so exciting for you?"
"In the studio I can do exactly what I want. If I want one more little light over there, I just put a lamp there. I love the whole process — styling, models, light — until everything comes together and the image looks exactly how I pictured it."
"Your work is who you are. Don't change it just because someone wants something different."

"If you woke up tomorrow without any gear, where would you start?"
"With a camera — but it doesn't have to be the most expensive one. For years I shot on a Canon 750D. When I came into Kamera Express to upgrade and showed my photos, the guy asked: 'How did you shoot these with that camera?' Next, I'd buy flashes. With flash you set your own light — from the left, from the right, exactly how you see it in your head."
